About Us

The Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law

Taking Action to End Poverty

Our Mission

The Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law is a national law and policy center that takes action to end poverty through policy development, communications, and impact litigation.

Why we take action

Like our founder, Sargent Shriver, we believe that “the law can help get the poor out of poverty.”  We embrace a bold advocacy agenda that includes policy development and modern communications, resulting in improved lives for low-wage workers, families with greater economic security, and neighborhoods that preserve opportunities for low-income individuals..

Improve the lives of low-wage workers
The right to fair compensation is fundamental to a just society.  We recognize that low-wage workers contribute more to the economy than they are paid.  Through communications and advocacy we address the growing wage gap and the need for public benefits so that all workers can live the healthy and prosperous lives they deserve.

Advance families toward economic security
Individuals and families possess the right to pursue a successful future free of discrimination, violence and institutional barriers.  Our policy and communications work ensures access to affordable housing, jobs, educational opportunities, financial institutions, and asset building so that people can enjoy lifelong stability and financial security.

Preserve communities and creating opportunity
Everyone has the right to live in a safe, diverse, and economically successful neighborhood.  We promote and advocate for fair housing laws and model neighborhood redevelopment so that communities enjoy economic growth while preserving housing, social networks and job opportunities for low-income people.

How we take action

The Shriver Center leads the poverty advocacy community through a bold advocacy agenda that includes:

Communications
More low-income people are served and served effectively when advocates and others work together to enhance their limited resources by sharing ideas, strategies, and information. We use a variety of communication techniques to promote the best and most efficient practices in using law and policy to end poverty.

Policy Development

We maximize state-level responses to federal law and policies.  Regardless of the context—limits, opportunities, or both—we help lawmakers and advocates translate law and policies into practical solutions to benefit low-income people and society as a whole.

Our values

The values of our founder, Sargent Shriver, guide us:

Leadership.  We believe poverty can be conquered.

Innovation. Working together, we find solutions.

Service. We’re committed to advancing the cause of social and economic justice by working for the public good.

Action.  We give effective voice, on a daily basis, to people rarely heard.
